Referral process
All referrals received will be assessed by a member of our medical team and assigned a priority and a specialty clinic as applicable. Some conditions may be more severe than others.
Applications from outside of Quebec and complex referrals are brought to the chief of staff for medical review. If we must decline an application based purely on medical criteria (the child is receiving appropriate care at home or there is no orthopaedic component to the condition), a letter will be sent to the person who has requested our help.
If it is determined that the child can benefit from care provided by Shriners Hospitals for Children — Canada, we will also determine whether they should be seen in a clinic in Montreal or at one of our outreach clinics for assessment. Outreach clinic locations include Bathurst (New Brunswick), Sudbury (Ontario), Gander (Newfoundland and Labrador), Halifax (Nova Scotia) and our satellite clinic in Winnipeg (Manitoba). In addition, telehealth services may be utilized. For out-of-province applications, the family and referring Shriner will receive an approval letter which confirms the appointment location, date, and time, and will also include the name of the physician.
